Calico Critters are what Sylvanian Families are now called in North America.  It changed in 1993 when Tomy lost rights to the name.  There are some differences in packaging, names, clothing and what comes as a set, but many times they are identical to what comes from Epoch.
If you live in the US, getting Calico Critters is easier and more affordable.
